Wave Technology
Inventors of Touchless APS Technology
The Future is Touchless
PedSafety was the first to adopt touchless actuation into accessible pedestrian signals and pedestrian push buttons using active infrared sensors. This precise range, verified through rigorous testing, minimizes false calls while maintaining reliable performance across our entire Wave product lineup.
Significantly more precise - minimizes false calls from unintentional motion or adverse weather conditions.
Why Wave Technology?
All the trusted performance you rely on, now touchless.
Precise 1-6 Inch Detection Range
The Wave product line features a carefully calibrated detection range of 1–6 inches, significantly more precise than competing sensors that detect motion up to 20 inches away.
Active Infrared Sensor Technology
Unlike microwave sensors, our active infrared sensors use infrared light to precisely reflect a hand, delivering intentional and reliable call placement every time.
Two Ways to Place a Call
The sensor operates independently from the mechanical button, offering pedestrians two distinct ways to place a call, touchless or physical press.

4EVR® MOAB Wave
Touchless Pedestrian Push Button
Touchless push button actuation using active infrared sensors. Place a call with a simple hand wave, no need to physically push a button.
Guardian® Duo
Touchless Networked or Independent APS
Wave technology allows for calls to be placed with the wave of a hand, featuring a new, larger LED light bar and sensor for improved visibility.
Guardian® Wave
Touchless Independent APS
The Guardian® platform enhanced with Wave touchless technology, offering pedestrians two distinct ways to place a call at any intersection.
nxtCycle Wave
Touchless Cyclist Push Button
Active infrared sensor technology brings touchless actuation to cyclists, enabling a call without physical contact from the bike lane.
WiAAPS® Wave
Touchless Networked APS
Networked accessible pedestrian signal with active infrared Wave technology, combining touchless actuation with full network connectivity.
Detection Capabilities
Learn more about the differentiating specs of active infrared sensors
Advanced active infrared sensors continuously monitor the environment for motion. Motion and presence can be detected by infrared sensors because infrared light reflects precisely off a hand. The motion is analyzed as intentional or as an outside factor, and a call is placed accordingly.
Extended press is a feature of APS that is activated when the push button is held down for 1 second or longer. The sensor has intuitive capabilities to discern both presence and motion — simple hand placement activates extended press features with no repetitive waving movements needed. Designed for universal accessibility, particularly supporting those with limited mobility or dexterity.
Precision Detection Technology
Our active infrared sensors operate in a specialized wavelength spectrum, enabling precise motion detection within a focused range. This targeted approach filters out environmental interference, including visible light and radio waves, perfect for high-traffic intersections where accurate pedestrian detection is critical.
Customizable Detection Zones
Detection ranges are precisely calibrated for each intersection's unique traffic patterns and accessibility needs. Pedestrian and cyclist buttons operate in a 1–6 inch range. Accessible pedestrian signals offer adjustable settings of 1–3, or 1–6 inches.
Superior Environmental Performance
Our active infrared sensors excel in demanding outdoor conditions. Engineered to withstand all climate conditions and fully compliant with NEMA TS2 temperature standards.
All-Weather Reliability
Maintains consistent performance across all temperature ranges. Operates flawlessly through rain, snow, ice, and hail.
Easy Installation & Maintenance
Active infrared sensors are pre-configured at our factory for immediate, accurate performance. Ready to use straight out of the box — no field adjustments needed. Simple installation process saves time and ensures reliability.
